Hi, I’m Megan.

I’m a writer/photographer based out of Raleigh, NC. As an introvert, I enjoy quietly puzzling people out. I like storytelling, but what I really love is listening to other people’s stories. I’m an old soul, a grateful Christian, a chronic museum-wanderer, and a drinker of too much Coca-Cola.

I find the stories of people and places that are a little off the beaten path and listen to their song. Curiosity, delight, and an appreciation for split-second details that explain the big picture are the marks that tend to blaze the trail for me. And I’m so glad you’re here!

If you’d like to get to know some of my work, I’d suggest starting with Long Way Around – a series of creative nonfiction articles about Blackbeard the pirate and all the lives he impacted (past and present – one of my favorite pieces in the series is about his twisted genealogy, and the people who try to track it).

If you’d like to get in touch, don’t hesitate to drop me a line; talking to strangers has started all of my favorite developments in the last couple of years.

Why the weird name?

In the words of Anais Mitchell, it’s the gift of poets to show how the world could be. I think it’s the honor of prose to show how the world really is – sharp thistles, golden sunlight, and all of the ordinary in between. My work leans towards getting comfortable in a world where both deep beauty and deep difficulty exist, and do not exclude one another. Plus, the name came out of a particularly trial-by-fire phase of my life, and now I’m attached to it.
